The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has blocked the US company Microsoft’s deal to buy video game developer Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion.
As reported by Ukrinform, the BBC reported it.
The CMA is said to have expressed concerns that the deal will “offer less innovation and fewer choices for gamers in the rapidly growing cloud gaming business.”
Microsoft and Activision opposed the decision and said they would appeal.
“The CMA’s report contradicts the UK’s ambition to be an attractive country to start a tech business. “We will actively work with Microsoft to overturn this decision on appeal,” said an Activision spokesperson.
In order for the deal to be ratified, it must be approved by the regulatory authorities of the UK, the US and the European Union.
The CMA is the first of three regulators to make a decision that could potentially derail Microsoft’s full takeover of Activision Blizzard. The value of the deal is US$68.7 billion.
As reported by Ukrinform, the underlying technology of the ChatGPT artificial intelligence system will be added to the Microsoft 365 operating software.
