Your Google Docs, better without pages

Do you use Google Docs? There’s a good chance it is because, let’s face it, it’s not the best productivity suite in terms of features or the most recommended in terms of privacy, but it’s very convenient. And although the same can be said about Microsoft Office Online, we are now talking about Google Docs and one of its newest and most satisfying features at the same time: format without pages.

It’s not that this is a feature that was just implemented, it’s been around for almost a year now, but if you’re a Google Docs user and still didn’t know about it, here’s the thing. Because? Because the “pageless” format is simply liberating: the tyranny of the folio is over, in a digital world where it barely makes sense most of the time. And yet mainstream word processors remain stuck in their forms.

So although we are talking about Google Docs or Google documents, call them what you want, we are referring to text documents, which nowadays are heavily influenced by the page format. Think about it: horizontal constraints, page breaks… Why does it have to be, when what you write will in the vast majority of cases never be printed? Well, it doesn’t have to, but it is what it is anyway… by default.

How to use pageless mode in Google Docs

It’s not the first or only app in its category to offer this pageless mode feature, but as I mentioned above, if you’re a Google Docs user and didn’t know about it before, it’s about time. Basically, it’s based on this:

To this:

Google Docs

For which you just need to enter the menu: “File > Page Settings” and activate the “No Pages” option either for the current document or for any new documents you create, as shown in the following image:

As you can also see, another option you can set as the default is the background color of the document. In any case, don’t be afraid to play because you can go back in no time. By the way, you can use it like this on Android as well.

And that’s all. It’s 2023 and restrictions like page breaks aren’t half normal. Also with pageless mode you can set the width of each paragraph independently if you wish, allowing you to freely compose the final format of your documents.
