The first quarter of 2023 brought no changes for the smartphone industry. Sales of new smartphones took another big slump.
14.6 percent: According to market figures from IDC, this is the decrease compared to the first quarter of 2022, when sales were already on a downward trend. A total of 268.8 million smartphones were sold. In Western Europe, the decline was still limited at 9.4 percent.
Ongoing inflation and macroeconomic challenges mean the smartphone industry will be in trouble for a while. IDC fears another “three to six tough months.” It could get better by the end of the year. It can always get worse: PC sales collapsed by up to 29 percent in the first quarter.
Samsung seizes power again
If we take a closer look at the figures for the largest manufacturers, they all turn red. After Apple ceded the top spot for a quarter, Samsung took back the top spot. This has to do with the good sales figures for the Galaxy S23 and S23 Ultra, although Samsung sold almost nineteen percent fewer devices.
The drop for Apple is just 2.3 percent, meaning the iPhone 14 effect hasn’t worn off yet. The market share difference between the two superpowers is also just 2 percent (22.5% vs. 20.5%), with the gap typically being larger in the first quarter. Xiaomi and Oppo follow with eleven and ten percent, Vivo closes the top 5 with 7.6 percent.
