The Russian new car market doubled

According to the Association of European Businesses (AEB), Russian dealers sold 51,466 new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in May, which is 112.1% more than in the same period in 2022. The market is growing for the second month in a row, but there is a fall here nothing special to celebrate, because the whole is exclusively in the low base.

Last year, the Russians were in no hurry to part with their money: an extremely difficult time had come and it took time to adapt to a new reality with cosmic prices and shortages. For example, our compatriots bought only 24,268 new cars in May 2022, and now, a year later, double that. We cried and got used to it, as FM Dostoevsky wrote.

Which specific cars were most in demand? The TOP-10 is traditionally opened by LADA: the result is 23,904 cars sold. It is followed by Haval, which was preferred by 7576 buyers. The bronze medalist was Geely, which sold 7,096 cars. The fourth position was taken by GAZ (3923 units) and the fifth by Changan (2516 units). The top ten also included UAZ, Great Wall, Kia, FAW and Sollers. It is worth noting that Chery should also be among the leaders, but since this Chinese sends data to the AEB once a quarter, and not once a month, it is not in the ranking.

And now to the models. The well-deserved first place was taken by LADA Granta, which attracted 17,041 buyers. The second is the LADA Niva family (6376 SUVs sold), the third is Haval Jolion (3965 vehicles). Fourth place was taken by the Geely Coolray crossover, for which 3,787 drivers chose it, and the Geely Tugella (1,587 people) took fifth. In addition to them, Haval F7X, Haval F7, Geely Atlas Pro, Haval Dargo and Changan CS35 Plus entered the top ten.
