UAZ off-road vehicles receive diesel engines of domestic production

A production site is being restarted in Yelabuga, where Ford petrol and diesel engines were previously produced. The loan for the “restart” of the plant will be provided by the state, Sollers will contribute less than a quarter of the amount and, as always, a company from a “friendly country” will act as a “technical partner”.

Good news from Tatarstan: the Sollers group has agreed with the Industrial Development Fund to grant a loan of 1.7 billion rubles, which will be used to reconfigure and launch an engine plant. Sollers itself will invest another 500 million from its own resources. The Russian Automobile Telegram channel reports that the engine assembly workshop, test bench section, cylinder head machining lines, crankshaft production and much more will be updated.

The Chinese JAC will act as a technical partner of the project and turbo diesel engines with a capacity of 2.0 to 2.7 liters will be produced at the restarted site. First of all, the engines are designed for light commercial vehicles, which are already produced in cooperation with Sollers and JAC at the former Ford plants directly in Yelabuga, but the two-liter engine also goes to UAZs.

Recall that earlier one of the Russian Ford plants was located in Yelabuga, where Transit vans, Kuga and Explorer crossovers were assembled. After the global exodus of the “blue oval” from our latitudes, only commercial vehicle production remained, and in 2022 it also ended. At the same time, in 2022, the production of Chinese JAC small commercial vehicles was launched under Sollers own brand – Atlant and Argo.
