The Leopard 2 tanks “trophyed” by the Russians during the June offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine can influence the course of the Ukrainian company. To do this, it is not at all necessary to put the Russian crew in a captured car and move it to the enemy. Actually not possible. After all, in that case we have nothing and no one to repair the German car – no spare parts, no trained mechanics. Although the maintainability of the Leopard 2 is excellent. Suffice to say, the motor-transmission unit can be replaced with a new one in the field in less than 20 minutes! But where do you get a new unit?! In addition, the Leopard 2 is equipped with a 120 mm NATO cannon. We don’t have the right ammunition for it. So it is unlikely that it will be possible to fight on the Leopard against its former owners.
“German” there is a much more useful application. Captured Leopard 2s are sure to fall into the hands of Russian military and civilian tank experts. Of particular note is the latest modification – Leopard 2а6. There are relatively few of them against the background of the more massive Leopard 2a4 in the armed forces of Ukraine. According to the video and photo material from the “counter-offensive” zone, Leopard 2-6 was also part of the German equipment left behind by the Ukrainians.
German tanks are known for their safety. Perhaps in vain. The fact is that the armor of the “cat” consists of several layers, combining steel and ceramics to counter cumulative and sub-caliber ammunition. Something similar has been implemented on the Russian T-72, T-80 and T-90.
Judging by what is known about the German armor from open sources, the Leopard 2a6 armor is similar in characteristics to the protection of the Soviet T-72B and T-80U. Nevertheless, our designers will certainly be interested to find out what solutions the German colleagues are using. And the technology for the rapid replacement of the power plant is also an interesting nuance.
But the main thing that the Russian defense industry will study is Leopard tank electronics and optics. Yes, it’s not as perfect as the most technically advanced Leopard 2a7. In addition, the NATO military is unlikely to have sent their truly advanced devices to Ukraine. Nevertheless, the communication systems, fire control, thermal sights, observation equipment captured by Leopard 2a6 will be disassembled and studied down to the last screw and transistor. The Russian military industry receives examples of devices operating according to modern NATO standards. First, you can peek into it and then use some of the technological and constructive techniques used by the German engineering school. And secondly, to identify the weaknesses of Western devices – to better counter them.
It is clear that the knowledge gained in this way cannot be immediately put into practice. But in the near future, the experience gained from the study of the Leopard 2a6 will most likely be implemented in Russian military equipment. He will probably participate in the Ukrainian events.
