New projects to strengthen the automotive industry in Kyrgyzstan seriously excited representatives of the domestic media. Discussions immediately started that this foreign country would help us. The AvtoVzglyad portal estimated whether not the most populous, not the richest and not the most technologically advanced country would be able to solve our internal problems purely.

Auto experts have been so tired of the Chinese theme lately that they are struggling to find an alternative to it. And since no alternative is somehow visible, the most provocative filling is used – for example, that the Russian auto industry will soon be saved … well, at least by Kyrgyzstan.

Kyrgyzophilia epidemic

The ignorant “patient zero” was the author of a Telegram channel, which published the following news: “In the first 5 months of this year, Kyrgyzstan exported a total of 2,741 cars to Russia and Kazakhstan, which is 11 times more than in the same period of 2022. <…> But soon new cars from the Kyrgyz assembly will also come to us. In May, they started building a small factory in the Chui region – together with the UzAuto company from Uzbekistan. The Ak-Suu plant will assemble Chevrolet and Isuzu cars. They want to organize the assembly of 19 models. In the first year, 10,000 cars will be assembled according to the SKD method. And then they want to make 30,000 a year with the little knot method, and some of the components will be sourced locally.

Despite the plethora of uncertainties in the text, indicated by the words “will”, “want”, “started”, the epidemic spread quickly through the media. And what – maybe this is the great domestic truth?

Little proud Kyrgyzstan will become a world automotive power and save the Russian market from a shortage of goods. Unfortunately, miracles do not happen, although the expert clearly underestimates the number of cars exported to Russia from the Asian republic.

Bringing back the unpopular

According to the Avtostat agency, in May 2023 alone, about 2,450 new cars from Kyrgyzstan were registered in our country. But even with this change, the volumes of cars shipped from there are insignificant and only make up 4.8% of our rather sluggish market. Not 10,000 extra cars a year will change the situation, and even 30,000 in a few years will seem like a drop in the ocean. You should also pay attention to what exactly is collected in a small factory in Ak-Suu. It is believed that Chevrolet Cobalt and some Isuzu models will settle on the assembly line. Such a nomenclature immediately evokes sad thoughts.

In 2014, when the Russian market was doing well, only 15,131 Cobalts were sold, representing 0.6% of the total number of cars sold. Even among the other models of the brand presented to us at that time, it was only fourth, behind Niva, Cruze and Aveo. It is therefore not surprising that in 2015 the company decided to stop selling Cobalt in Russia due to low demand. As for Isuzu, the Japanese brand has never been a resounding success in Russia. In the same 2014, our compatriots bought a total of 766 Isuzu cars, and these were exclusively trucks – NLR85 and NMR85

Little politician

Among other things, no one removed the question – why do we need models who live to be a hundred years old by lunch? And the quality is not quite clear. Will the Kyrgyz be able to provide an acceptable level of their handicrafts, at least comparable to modern Chinese machines? I have serious doubts about this. However, there are doubts about the reality of the plans. Will this small factory be built, will it start, will it not start producing the indicated models, will it come true, will it not reach the indicated volumes? All this is written on the water with a pitchfork.

Yes, it doesn’t matter. If mighty China, the world’s first economy, cannot help us fill the market, then where is Kyrgyzstan with a population half the size of Moscow. Kyrgyzstan is too “a little politician, you might say – not a politician.”

So, whatever you say, we will have to do something ourselves and not wait for the Kazakhs, Uzbeks, Kyrgyz to come to our aid and overwhelm us with cheap but high-quality cars. The rescue of the drowning man is the work of the drowning man himself.
