Double fuel consumption: who is responsible for the sharp increase in fuel consumption
Every driver knows the average consumption of his car: from the number of refuelings per week to the exact number of litres. It is easy not to notice an increase in appetite of several hundred grams, but in a few liters it is almost impossible. But it also happens that the costs almost double. Who is to blame, where to run and how things can end, says the AvtoVzglyad portal.

“How much is food?” – the question is extremely acute today, since gasoline and diesel are at the peak of quotations, and prices at gas stations are rewritten almost every day. We live in historic times, comrades: this has never happened before, and here it is again. The last check at the gas station has already exceeded all reasonable limits, but for some reason the “iron horse” began to “ask for more” more often. A couple of extra liters can be attributed to the quality of the fuel, and underfilling, and traffic jams. But what if costs double? You can’t explain this behavior with a rock on the gas pedal. You have to get into the iron.

A car is a modern and high-tech thing, so the first thing we do is connect sensible diagnostic equipment to the computer – they are also “brains” – and look for errors and indicators. Peace and quiet? It doesn’t mean anything yet. You need to dig deeper, because “zhor” does not arise from scratch. They looked around the brakes, they didn’t seem to be stuck, they replaced the air filter, cleaned the mass airflow sensor (DMRV). There is an effect, but it is far from the indicators declared by the plant. So let’s move on.

Accelerate. With this node, you need to be extremely polite and accurate, it is not always possible to clean it, and some “cleaning” actions immediately lead to replacement. However, a faulty damper will manifest itself in many other symptoms, in the list of which the power comes last. What can not be said about the lambda probe.

This sensor is usually located right at the exhaust and after the catalytic converter. Its task is to diagnose an excess of oxygen in the air-fuel mixture, and it does this “on the contrary”: it measures O2 in the exhaust gases. The information received is sent to the control unit, which in turn increases or decreases the amount of fuel supplied to the cylinders. And the “lambda” works only on a hot one: when the engine warms up, it is not involved.

If the “probe” begins to run out, then the system works on an average indicator, and when it finally breaks down, a massive fuel overflow begins. At the same time, you see black smoke coming from the pipe and feel that the engine seems to be running at half power. Such symptoms directly indicate a lambda malfunction, but may not be reflected in errors.

Replacing it is an expensive pleasure, so you first need to check the wires for breakage, clean the “chip” and, of course, the lambda sensor itself. His death is often associated with low-quality gasoline refueling, so careful but thorough procedures can bring the node back to life. How lucky, unfortunately not everyone, but it’s definitely worth a try.
