Georgia blocked the transit of US cars to Russia

As part of the ban on the import of American cars with an engine capacity of more than 1.9 liters, which came into effect on August 1, Georgia finally stopped supplying cars to our country.

VPost journalists confirm that border guards have already closed the Upper Lars checkpoint to sanctioned vehicles, including cars imported into the country from Armenia. The current ban applies to hybrid cars and electric cars. And from September 26, the embargo will affect European brands.

– Georgia began to cause difficulties even before August 1. All this has been going on for two or three months. American and European cars were divided by number. If up to $50,000, then they passed. I haven’t wanted to transport anything through Georgia since March. In addition, the money does not normally flow there, the transfers are blocked. The logistics have become very complex. And the fall will be rich in bad news about sanctioned goods,” Ararat Mardoyan, the founder of the Autodegustator company, told Kommersant.

In the first half of the year, the throughput of vehicles from Georgia to Russia almost quadrupled to 3.78 thousand units. Exports to Armenia grew even more – almost 12.5 times, that is, more than 10 thousand cars. The reason for this was a special scheme for importing cars into Russia, which was used by Russian businessmen. The merchants first delivered cars to Georgia, from where they were transported to Armenia, where they cleared customs and took them through the Upper Lars checkpoint to the Russian Federation.

Experts believe that the closure of the Georgian corridor will force airlines to mainly use supply channels via Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan. Where, in turn, certain difficulties are also outlined.
