The attitude of the authorities to the idea of the head of the Federation Council Committee on Economic Policy Andrei Kutepov to extend the repair period in the framework of mandatory motorcycle liability insurance has become known. The senator prepared his proposal last spring.

The proposed innovation received generally positive feedback from officials. In this context, it is proposed to extend the maximum period allowed by the Compulsory Motorcycle Liability Insurance Act for the repair of a car damaged in an accident from 30 to 45 days.

Let us not forget that insurance company lobbyists have previously repeatedly stated that, given the problems with the supply of spare parts for foreign cars, 30 days to restore a car is too little. This reportedly forces insurers not to repair the car, but to compensate the damage with money.

In fact, such an arrangement is much more profitable for insurance companies. Because monetary calculations use the vehicle’s depreciation coefficient, which in many cases underpays 50% of the amount owed to the victim. For this reason, insurers avoid repairing cars under mandatory motorcycle liability insurance, hiding behind various excuses, including the one mentioned above – about problems with spare parts.

For this reason, extending the maximum repair period will not have a significant impact on the current situation. Unless this could cause insurance companies to experience further delays in paying out money to road accident victims – from the current 30 to 45 days.

According to the Interfax agency, Kutepov’s bill can now be submitted to the State Duma for consideration after minor changes.
