What hidden functions does the ‘shark fin’ on the roof of a car perform?
Surely every driver at least once paid attention to the “fin” installed on top of the car, mistaking it for an advanced antenna. In fact, this miniature aesthetic comb on the roof performs several useful and, admittedly, useless functions. For details – the portal “AvtoVzglyad”.

For the first time such elements appeared in the automotive industry in the distant thirties of the last century. Let’s say, on the Czech Tatra T77. But even the Soviet GAZ-A had them. Engineers integrated the accessory as an aerodynamic keel on the roof of the car, giving the car extra stability. It looked interesting and attractive.

Apparently, this is why the “lotion” gave rise to a whole concept of future car design, which in the 1950s was called the “fin style”, which was inherited in particular by the ZIL-111 and GAZ-13 ” Chaika”. Then “Baroque” became annoying and car artists slowly but surely began to move away from it. But as they say, everything new is forgotten old, and therefore “aerostyle”, and with that the scallops on the top of cars to come back into fashion years later.

In an updated form, the so-called shark fin has appeared in the modern automotive industry on models of the premium segment, not only as part of a design metamorphosis and partial improvement in aerodynamic performance, but also to rid the body or interior of a vehicle of the usual, annoying antennas.

That’s right: the designers integrated a board with an amplifier and an antenna cable into a miniature housing. But where the transmitter previously only picked up radio waves, it now receives GPS, GSM and TV signals. Useful, beautiful, informative. In addition, the fin is not afraid of high pressure in car washes and is not prone to damage during the services of robot washing equipment. And hardly anyone would want to steal an accessory: tea, not an expensive satellite dish.

Today, ‘shark fins’ are widely used in the mass segment of the automotive industry. What can I say, when even LADA has them. But those who do not have such an antenna can safely put a “dummy” on the roof – the well-known Chinese flea market sells them for free. And in all sizes and colors.

And even if the “gadget” does not serve you as a real antenna, it will certainly add a few tens of thousands of rubles to the cost of the car in style. Remember, as in the joke: “don’t open the windows in the car, man, let everyone think we have air conditioning.”
