More cameras and traffic lights: authorities are once again concerned about the problem of road accidents

The Cabinet of Ministers was concerned about the increase in the number of accidents: in the first eight months of this year, the number of traffic accidents on the roads increased by 4%. Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin ordered road workers, traffic police and regional authorities to develop plans for appropriate measures.

As Kommersant reports, the accident situation was discussed at a meeting of the government’s road safety committee. Based on the results, the head of the commission, Marat Khusnullin, ordered Rosavtodor, Avtodor, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the regions to develop plans to reduce the number of accidents by December 1, with deadlines for implementation and sources of funding .

For example, plans should include the arrangement of pedestrian crossings in combination with speed bumps, the installation of traffic lights with a button on uncontrolled zebra crossings on highways with four or more lanes – all these measures have long been specified in the national project “Safe Quality Roads”, but due to the increasing number of collisions with pedestrians, authorities have ordered that “special attention” be paid to this.

Other measures include additional noise strips for bends on two-lane roads and the installation of signage. This is intended to “further inform drivers and focus their attention” as rollovers increased 24% from January to August compared to last year. Finally, the government ordered to “study the issue” of installing cameras on dangerous stretches of roads.
