What happens to the car when you press the Start-Stop button at high speed?
We have all long been accustomed to the fact that the Start-Stop system, which replaced the usual ignition key, starts and stops the engine by pressing the button of the same name. Comfortable? And how! What happens if this button is clicked while the car is moving? For details – the portal “AvtoVzglyad”.

To begin with, we remind you: when you touch the Start-Stop button, the ignition system is activated and the dashboard lights up with notifications from the on-board computer. And if you press the brake pedal when pressing the button, the engine will start without a doubt. You can ‘extinguish’ it by ‘clicking’ the key again, but without using the brake pedal. First, however, you must put the gearbox in parking mode.

But what happens if you disable Start-Stop while stopped with the car running and the transmission in Drive mode? In fact, nothing supernatural or scary. The security algorithm automatically shifts the transmission to Park and in some cases also applies the electronic parking brake, if the car has one. Of course, the system also switches off the engine.

It’s a different matter when the car is moving. In this case, absolutely nothing happens once you press the engine start/stop button. To avoid accidents on the roadway, modern cars are equipped with a special protection system. Therefore, simply turning off the engine while driving will not work. But this, we repeat, is only possible with a single press of a button. And on some car models – even repeatedly. However, it is possible to disrupt the algorithm of the blocking mechanism.

To do this, you need to touch the Start-Stop button three times or hold it for a long time, and only then the power source will become silent and the car will continue its inertial movement, gradually losing speed. In this case, the transmission does not switch to parking mode, so as not to cause an emergency on the road. At this point, it is better for the driver to independently put the gearbox in neutral to minimize potential risks. If you don’t touch the box, it will “freeze” in Drive mode. However, when you activate Start-Stop while driving, it “comes to life” again, and when you press the accelerator pedal it immediately adapts to the speed and engine speed.

Of course, situations on the road are different, and such a procedure is theoretically able to save the last drops of gasoline in the tank to have time to get to the gas station, as well as minimize the effect of boiling coolant and neutralize possible breakdowns to the unit if, for example, there is loss of traction, a decrease or increase in temperature, speed and the Check Engine light came on. In general, it is strongly not recommended to experiment with stopping the engine at speed. Firstly, the risk of short-term overheating cannot be excluded, and secondly, the oil can even boil. Finally, when the engine is switched off, the relay responsible for maintaining a stable voltage in the vehicle’s on-board network is also switched off.
