Mission impossible: why AVTOVAZ refused to localize Duster under the LADA brand

After the restructuring of Renault’s Russian operations, which resulted in the acquisition of the assets of the French automaker by AVTOVAZ, the possibility of resuming production of some models was considered, for example, the popular Duster. However, there was no chance to implement this idea in practice. And that’s why.

As Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports, Evgeniy Shmelev, First Executive Vice President for Strategy and Technical Development of AVTOVAZ, explained why the LADA Duster project has no prospects of implementation. According to him, most Renault Dusters were sold in four-wheel drive versions, and making the same car yourself proved unrealistic due to the lack of the necessary components.

“We immediately realized that we simply wouldn’t make the Duster with four-wheel drive: everything was blocked, or there was a risk of blocking. But according to statistics, more than 90% of Duster sales in Russia came from the all-wheel drive version. Therefore, it made no sense to create a Duster without all-wheel drive in the form of just a light crossover, dragging all the equipment and investing in further replacement of components, Shmelev explained.

Let us not forget that Denis Pak, the then head of the Automotive Industry and Railway Engineering Department of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, spoke in May last year about AVTOVAZ’s plans to produce the LADA Duster crossover. Comrade, I was very mistaken…
