What should the engine’s idling speed actually be?

Many car owners are convinced that when idling, the engine works in a special mode, which minimizes fuel consumption and at the same time charges the battery. Actually this is not true. Let’s say more: not all engine speeds are equally useful.

The working process of the power unit occurs when the crankshaft rotates and switches to the increased load mode only after the accelerator pedal is pressed. When idling, the engine performs the function of charging energy consumers, for example, lighting equipment, a heater or an audio system. However, this does not mean that the battery is currently charging.

In fact, the drive does not have enough engine speed to keep itself in good condition. And if you are thirsty while idling in freezing temperatures, this may not happen after you have to restart the engine. Yes, the battery runs out and you end up in a puddle. To avoid this, keep the engine speed above the normal idle speed limit. Or just drive the car before turning it off.

What should the idle speed actually be? Firstly, stable, not floating and jumpy. Moreover, without the manifestation of explosion of the power source. Secondly, sufficient for optimal operation of not only the battery, but also the generator, oil pump and cooling system. Finally, not excessively high, and not extremely low either. To ensure specific performance algorithms, the idle speed should be at the level of 1000 rpm. Naturally, with warming, this indicator may increase, and with increasing temperature it may decrease. In both cases it is insignificant.

As for engine speeds while driving, the optimum range is believed to be between 2500 and 4500 rpm for naturally aspirated engines and from 2100 for turbocharged engines. In other words, the motor provides the most benefit when operating at 50-70% of maximum torque. In the winter season, due to the duration of warm-up and increased dynamic and climatic loads, experts do not recommend running the engine above 2500 rpm while driving.
