The dealer holding company Avilon, represented by the AGR company, will finalize the deal for the purchase of the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus (HMMR) plant in St. Petersburg early next year. And the most curious thing in this whole story is that the company, at least in the first phase, will produce Hyundai and Kia cars. Granted, under the GAC brand.
According to the Russian Automobile Telegram channel, citing sources familiar with the progress of negotiations between GAC representatives and Avilon management, production is expected to start as early as the end of January 2024. Insiders claim that the plant will resume the assembly of Hyundai and Kia models, but since the Koreans have not renewed the HMMR license to use these brands, the cars will be produced under the GAC brand.
In the future, large-scale assembly of Chinese cars is also possible, but the plan for the first year and a half is only the production of ‘Korean’ cars. For this purpose, HMMR has a considerable stock of parts – enough to assemble approximately 70,000 cars. If there is a shortage of components, they can be purchased in Kazakhstan.
