Why does the number of traffic accidents in Russia continue to rise sharply?

The difficult economic situation in our country has affected almost all areas of life. It also had a very detrimental effect on the number of accidents. So, according to official statistics of the traffic police, the number of traffic accidents in Russia has increased by 5% in the past ten months compared to the same period last year. But until 2023, the number of such incidents declined steadily every year. The AvtoVzglyad portal found out what caused the increase in the number of traffic accidents.

However, there is nothing complicated about this issue. The country’s fleet is aging before our eyes: the average age is approaching 15 years. At the same time, prices for new vehicles are unaffordable and most of our compatriots cannot afford a new car. And spare parts, although not scarce, are terribly expensive, and sometimes you have to wait several months for deliveries of the “original” and not Chinese dubious products. However, there are other reasons for the increase in accidents.

And if we talk about “seasonal” accidents, car owners today save a lot on tires. For example, experts from the Avtostat agency claim that this year 40% of car owners refused to buy new winter tires. In short, the situation is dire, which is confirmed by insurers.

– Now the trend towards deterioration of the vehicle fleet is beginning to prevail due to its rapid obsolescence, persistent problems with the supply of some spare parts, an increase in the supply of non-original spare parts from unverified manufacturers, an increase in share of ultra-budget cars with a minimum number of passive and active safety options, savings on maintenance, consumables and other spare parts, including tires. And unfortunately you can see that the effect of the new habit of safe driving that emerged among some drivers in recent years was gradually offset by the deterioration of the technical condition of the fleet,” says Sergei Demidov, vice president for car insurance at Renaissance Insurance, commenting on the current state of affairs on the AvtoVzglyad portal.
