Why do drivers in the north carry a pan in winter?
In the central region it was freezing and many drivers switched to public transport: in some places the yards were heavily snow-covered, while others did not start at all. For some, the battery said ‘goodbye’ and sometimes the oil froze. How do those who live where regular frosts of -20 are the norm survive? Do they walk alone? No, the people there are only becoming more resourceful due to the bad weather.

It is icy, cold and damp in the Mother Lake. It chills you to the bone, and not just in people. Looking at the sad attempts of the battery and starter to crank the crankshaft, sometimes you want to give up this useless endeavor and head towards the bus stop. A warm garage, that’s what you should ask Sinterklaas! But the fairytale old man cannot do that; There are not that many heated parking spaces in nature. Following the old Russian tradition, we will have to reinvent the wheel.

But this is in our capitals, but what about the people in the north? You may not even be able to wait for a bus there, and the Moscow metro lines are treacherously frozen near Troitsk. Should we also walk until spring? You can, of course, install a preheater, if, of course, your grandfather left a worthy legacy. Or don’t turn off the car in the winter when Dad has an oil rig. The remaining 99.8% of motorists from the northern regions of Russia have a simple and effective solution that allows them to start the engine in frost.

So, the problem lies in the engine oil, which turns into a thick and non-transportable lubricant during severe frost. It must be warmed up, which the preheater does, by heating the antifreeze and “driving” it through the engine circuit. How do you get a similar effect with less labor?

You will need a construction hair dryer, which can be bought on marketplaces for a thousand rubles, and a very ordinary pan. In the latter you need to drill a hole that can easily fit a hair dryer at an angle of 45 degrees. The next thing is a matter of technology: the resulting home-made heater is placed under the crankcase, in which all the oil drained during the night is located, and is connected to a socket. All that remains is to wait.

A construction hair dryer, reinforced with a metal circuit, will quickly heat the lubricant, which in turn will significantly facilitate not only starting, but also idling, significantly reducing wear on the cylinder walls, rings and pistons themselves.

Simple, cheap, productive – just the way we like it! And most importantly, anyone can do it, because an investment of twenty liters of gasoline and old food containers, which you will certainly find in the garbage bins, is much easier than retrofitting. And ten times cheaper. But where can you find a socket if you don’t even have a cold garage?
