How roadside dummies influence accident rates
Caring for road safety is a multinational story. The goal is the same: to reduce the number of accidents and thus mortality on asphalt, but the solutions are very diverse. Some are downright amazing. In South Korea, for example, mannequins are placed on roads and roadsides. Why, the portal “AvtoVzglyad” discovered.

Road safety is based on many different aspects: the quality of the road surface, bumpers with lights and other road equipment, the number of police per square kilometer and cameras for photo and video recording of violations. This whole thing only works as a whole and only from a clear mentality.

In Russia, for example, drivers commit fewer and fewer violations every year, and pedestrians commit more and more. Why? Yes, because some cameras get fined for every sneeze, while others go completely unpunished. A pair of police officers will arrest the same number of pedestrian offenders, half of whom will be released. Well, who will fine a grandmother who crosses a slippery and snowy road at an angle? No one, of course. And there is no point in explaining to her: “son”, “guilty”, “small pension”, “old mother”, the tear of a stingy man, tomorrow the same route. As long as the fines do not arrive in the letterbox, there will be no results. We understand it only through the wallet, unfortunately and ah.

I do not even want to mention the means of individual mobility in vain – here lies the issue of control and restrictions at the federal level, which has already been said a lot by the highest police officials. The sheer multi-fold increase in the number of accidents in 2023 (the counting of which has only just begun) led to a wave of popular anger, which will undoubtedly be resolved by March. In March, as you know, not only the motorcycle season opens. By March we need results, and concrete ones. And they will be: price – shoulder straps.

However, we are not unique. The same applies to other countries, where the local mentality far outweighs international road safety rules. Asia generally stands apart in this respect, because European dogmas there lead to misunderstandings or laughter, and the rules only lead to collapse. That’s why we have to invent our own mechanisms. It was invented in South Korea.

At the place of repair work, emergency areas and other “ambushes” it is not enough to erect a fence and signs; Koreans are too enthusiastic about smartphones, regularly look at the screen and do not pay close attention to the road. Knowing this characteristic aspect, the Korean authorities came up with an interesting and, above all, working option.

Life-size dolls are placed in dangerous places, dressed in the clothing of road workers, equipped with a glowing rod and moving. No matter how many times you look at the phone screen, you will definitely notice such a “movement” and have time to react. Human! Reflex – slow down. A fine is a fine, it does not solve the problem, but the first priority is to reduce the number of accidents. For this purpose, as you know, all goals are good!
