Taxi rides can become ten times more expensive

The Association of the Self-Employed of Russia sent a letter to Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin with a request to exempt taxi drivers in private cars from undergoing daily technical and medical examinations. They have had this responsibility since September, when the taxi law came into effect.

As RBC reports, citing a letter to Mishustin, nearly two million people could leave the industry by 2024 if the requirement for mandatory inspections is not eliminated for self-employed drivers. A total of 2.5 million drivers in private cars now work in taxis – fulfilling 63% of orders in the country. If the regulation, which the association considers excessive, is not abolished, the number of taxi rides will decrease by 90% and costs will increase by a factor of 10 to 12 during peak hours.

The letter states that it is physically impossible to undergo medical and technical examinations every day – the availability of points and centers for this throughout Russia does not exceed 5%. Moreover, the costs of these mandatory activities exceed the daily income of taxi drivers.

The association believes that self-employed drivers who are not included in the FSIS “Taxi” now continue to work in the sector only due to the lengthy “preparation phase” – the regions are still developing the necessary regulations and compliance controls of the provisions of the law have not started everywhere. According to the Association of the Self-Employed, the majority of taxi drivers are not ready to meet the new requirements and plan to enter the delivery, service and construction sectors or remain unemployed altogether.
