Politicians from the United States and China tell the whole world about irreconcilable contradictions and mutually exclusive ambitions of both countries. All types of Chinese cars cannot reach American wallets due to protectionist legislation. Nevertheless, the Chinese discovered the Achilles heel of the American auto industry and took full advantage of it to gain a foothold in one of the largest auto markets. The role of the “back porch” was played by batteries for electric vehicles
As you know, “electric trains” have long become a kind of fetish, an end in itself, intensively introduced by the “greens” who have seized power in the West and other activists of non-traditional trends. The United States has been almost ahead of the rest in this sense for the past decade. But only quite recently (relatively, of course) did they find out that their beloved electric cars, including the odious Tesla, are actually manufactured in China: they have to put a Chinese “heart” into its American body: batteries and motors.
At the same time, it was discovered that more than 60% of lithium batteries for electric vehicles are produced by the Chinese: Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd, BYD, CATL, Gotion High-tech Co, Sunwoda and Eve Energy. And this is unacceptable according to the current geopolitical guidelines of the US authorities. Because China is practically already an enemy to them: it’s about to take Taiwan, it supports these awful Russians and has generally set its sights on too many things in the world order in recent years. It is not without reason that Huawei has actually become persona non grata!
And despite all this, American automakers don’t really have their own capacity to produce batteries for electric vehicles. These strategic concerns led to a simple conclusion: Let’s start battery factories here in America.
And they started organizing. But in a specific way. The much sought-after “independent” American production of lithium batteries is actually created under the control of the same Chinese. For example, Gotion High-Tech Co (with participation from Volkswagen) recently invested in the establishment of such production facilities in two US states, Illinois and Michigan. Despite the fact that VW recently acquired an interest in the Chinese electric car supplier XPeng. And the latter has a minority stake in another monster of the Middle Kingdom lithium battery market, CATL.
Previously, in February 2023, Ford Motor announced that, together with the same CATL, it plans to build its battery factory in Michigan for $3.5 billion. Yes, there is also GM, which together with Korea’s LG and Samsung is building a number of major lithium battery production companies in the United States. And the Koreans are not an opponent of America, but a disciplined satellite. Nevertheless, the share of the car market that Chinese companies will be able to control (via ‘battery’ offerings) will still be more than impressive. And it is not a fact that they will stop there.
So it turns out that the “sworn partners” of the United States will have a lot of influence to influence the internal affairs of the “flagship of the free world”, whose helms are trying to be greener than green…
