The former Volkswagen car factory at the Grabtsevo industrial park in the Kaluga region should soon be operational again. They were going to restart it late last year, but those plans were not destined to become reality.
As RIA Novosti reports, the Governor of the Kaluga Region, Vladislav Shapsha, during a speech in the Federation Council, announced the timing of the restart of the enterprise. “Volkswagen will launch in the first half of this year, all the work for this has been done,” he promised.
The meeting point is currently closed until February 29. Earlier, the official stated that regional authorities are communicating with investors about restarting the plant, noting that “these negotiations have already been finalized.”
The factory, now owned by the Russian company Art-Finance, has a capacity of 225,000 cars per year. Until spring 2022, the company produced Volkswagen Polo and Tiguan, as well as Skoda Rapid. The intention was that work would resume at the end of last year, but the reason for this did not happen is still unknown. The governor refused to talk about this, citing trade secrets and some tricks of competitors who are “immediately running to put a spoke in our wheels.”
