Despite all the difficulties that have arisen as a result of anti-Russian sanctions, the road builders continue to set ambitious goals for themselves. In the coming years they want to lay hundreds of kilometers of new tracks and reconstruct many old ones. In particular, to expand Moscow’s outbound highways to finally rid them of the “red” congestion.

In 2021, a record number of tracks were built and reconstructed in Russia. And at the forum of road initiatives “Innovative Technologies and Intelligent Transport Systems in Road Construction”, organized by the state-owned company Avtodor, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Marat Khusnullin said the authorities had no intention of slowing down. In addition, he believes this is a great way to ‘save’ on inflation.

The government’s immediate plans include the reconstruction of 84% of urban agglomeration roads (2023) and at least 50% of regional roads (2024). Particular attention will be paid to bypass networks: about 140,000 km will be equipped, which will take up about 80% of the traffic. Two so-called corridors also have priority: west-east (M-12 highway) and north-south (St. Petersburg – Moscow – Krasnodar with a branch to Crimea and Astrakhan).

Another important project for the near future is the expansion of outbound highways in the capital. More specifically, the authorities plan to get rid of traffic jams near Moscow sections of the M1 “Belarus”, M3 “Ukraine” and M8 “Kholmogory” highways. But Mr Khusnullin did not go into details, not even mentioning estimated dates. There is only agreement on M1: all works (design of interchanges, extension of route to Bolshaya concrete road) will be completed by 2027.

The dynamic pace of road construction is of course good, as long as the quality does not suffer. However, the deputy prime minister assured that there would be no problems with him, the authorities would tighten control. But with what difficulties may arise, it is with working equipment. After all, according to Khusnullin, the dependence on foreign companies is now 50%. But here the road builders hope for help from Asians – especially from Chinese suppliers.
