By the end of 2022, the Russian car market will decline by 55%

As a result of the special military operation and subsequent events, sales of new cars in the Russian market fell dramatically – in May, an anti-record was set at 24,268 cars sold. But despite this, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation is quite optimistic: they say that things are not going well, but by the end of the year we will lose “only” 55% of the 2021 result.

In early 2022, the then chairman of the committee, Dr. Thomas Stärzel, at the traditional press conference of the Association of European Businesses (AEB), a slight increase in the Russian car market – by 3.3% to 1.72 million cars . But something happened that no one in any way expected: Russia launched a special operation in Ukraine, sanctions were lifted, serious problems arose with the supply and production of cars.

In the new, completely unpredictable reality, no one dared to correct his predictions: experts limited themselves to the vague “yes, the market will shrink significantly, but how much time will tell.” But finally, at least some figures were given by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The department therefore assumes that by the end of 2022, the market will fall by 55% compared to the 2021 result, i.e. dealers will sell about 750,000 cars.

Well, that’s quite optimistic, as only 318,114 cars were sold between January and May – and that if we take into account the first months before the crisis (91,662 units in January and 114,349 units in February). It is clear that the department has high hopes for AvtoVAZ with its state personnel without ABS and airbags, the mythical Moskvich, which should be put on the assembly line before the end of the year, and possibly for the “Chinese”. Or the ministry is just inattentive and just doesn’t understand the scale of the disaster…
