Toast to the commemoration: why are car prices still held in Russia today?

Presenting national car awards, choosing from a range of the season’s most notable novelties, has long become an annual tradition for the industrial community in Russia. And while there is no great benefit to such events, they are still held even now, when the new car market, having lost the biggest players, plunged into a deep coma. But why? And what’s next for the awards? The answers to these questions are in the video interview of the AvtoVzglyad portal with the leaders of TOP-5 Auto.

In September, the automotive community presented the winners of two – arguably the most popular – specialist awards at the same time: “Car of the Year” and “TOP-5 Car”. And if the first is nothing more than a purely commercial and highly questionable project with a secret jury and muddy procedures, then the second is the complete opposite.

Judge for yourself: in the “TOP-5 Auto” the winners are chosen by fifty motoring journalists, including highly respected and competent people. And, most importantly, after each stage, their scanned ballots are published on the prize’s official website: everyone can go and see who voted for what.

Another question is: why is all this necessary now, when the Russian new car market is suffering huge losses?

If earlier the awards ceremony for the winners of auto awards could be called truly solemn, then in the past the awards ceremony was more of a “cabal”. At least because the representatives of manufacturing companies were read on the fingers of one hand. That’s understandable: the Chinese have few nominations, the Japanese and Koreans don’t stick out, the Europeans are sitting on their suitcases, the Americans are waving to us from across the ocean.

Nevertheless, the organizers of the awards could not help summarizing the results – even with the award of “empty seats”. After all, the seasons traditionally open in the middle of the year. That is, the past got a start in the summer of 2021, when no one could have guessed where the growing Ukrainian conflict would lead. And it would be wrong to leave everything halfway through.

And what to expect? The outlook is still vague, there is no hope for a quick recovery of the market and the return of fugitive manufacturers. Will the organizers refuse the awards or will they replace the departed nominees with assertive “Chinese” and shamefully lagging UAZs? The answer to this question comes in a video interview with the leaders of TOP-5 Auto, which can be viewed here.
