Military correspondents, party representatives, unknown volunteers, public figures – it seems that now everyone is going in one direction or another – the new regions of Russia and beyond – to the front line. The AvtoVzglyad portal talked to one of the representatives of this new vibrant volunteer environment, Crimean activist Aleksey Zhivov, and found out how the products of the Russian automotive industry, which bring volunteers to the front in the form of humanitarian aid to our soldiers , fight.

Aleksey has already sent three UAZs to the front: a Hunter and a Patriot pickup. In his Telegram channel, he writes a lot about the need to urgently increase motorization in the front line, noting that there is an acute shortage of light wheeled vehicles in the advanced units. First of all – light SUVs.

“The situation reached such an absurd level that to leave the position the artillery colonel had to call KamAZ or take the Grad out of combat duty and move on,” says Alexei Zhivov. – I wrote, talked, knocked on the door, and then my voluntary friends and I decided that it was better to show what we need by our own example, and began to buy used UAZs and Niva ourselves. We were helped by philanthropists who handed out millions of rubles to help the military or donated cars themselves. Over the past 1.5 months, the Russian Ministry of Defense has actively joined the process, sending hundreds of new “Loaves” and “Patriots” to the front. By the way, the Ministry sent SUVs to the units, but not in large quantities. The problem now is that these domestic cars (even new ones) are constantly breaking down and there are not enough spare parts for them. Because the UAZ is no longer a military vehicle designed for heavy duty, but a rather mediocre and expensive set of foreign components, hastily assembled at the factory according to the principle “it will do” …

Recall that in the struggle to improve the quality of its products, UAZ went the usual way for Russia and began to replace the missing components with foreign ones. At some point, UAZ fell outside the scope of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation in terms of the number of Russian-made components, turning into a hodgepodge of foreign components. But, despite all attempts, technically complex components did not appear in Russia. Which led to a temporary halt of all production after February 24, 2022 and the emergence of “anti-crisis” cars without a catalytic converter, central locking, ABS and airbags.

The production culture at UAZ and ZMZ has long since become a household name. The car is poorly assembled, it requires complex “additional assembly” and repainting. These vehicles begin to rot in 2-4 years, and by the age of 10 they turn into a sieve. According to the reviews of the military, the quality of the new UAZs is also terrifying. The same view is shared by intelligence agencies, who put the “bread” first. The most common nickname of front-line soldiers about UAZs of the latest modifications: “they break every day.”

– Of course, the army should not have equipment that cannot withstand the rigors of the army’s exploitation. But there is simply nothing to replace them. We have no other manufacturers of light off-road vehicles. No development, no competition. Everything is dead. As if the Ministry of Defense did not even think that such a trifle as off-road vehicles could come in handy for the army. for what? There are also tanks and legs. But as it turned out during SVO’s trial, tanks are a fat target for ATGMs and legs are for “petals”. And in general, the role of passenger off-road vehicles has greatly increased in the mobile decentralized war. So it turns out that the UAZ is not suitable for the needs of military service for a number of reasons, but we still have nothing else, ”says Alexey Zhivov.

According to the volunteer, even an ordinary Duster with a diesel engine is better than any UAZ, and if the guys have Toyota or Mitsubishi pickups, then this is just a gift for the company:

– Highly reliable machines that can pull you out of a fiery hell. Our industry produces nothing even remotely like the monsters of the Japanese-Korean or now even the Chinese auto industry. The military needs simple, reliable, five-seat, diesel pick-ups, but they are not available. The concept of “we will buy everything in Europe or China” predictably led us to a broken low. Our products are produced in small volumes, are expensive, have unsatisfactory quality and low consumer properties…

As a way out of this situation, Aleksey Zhivov proposes to abolish customs duties on foreign cars, or at least on cars from friendly countries. Saturate the country with relatively inexpensive vehicles, including for the military’s needs. Buy foreign SUVs. At the same time, in his opinion, it is now necessary to imprison a young team for creating a line of diesel engines or locating foreign engines. It took Iran, with all its limitations, less than 10 years to copy advanced Western drone technology, we can do it faster…

What should not be done? Volunteers and anyone who is not indifferent to the problems of equipping and equipping our army have one exact answer: we must not be idle.
