Warranty or a big discount: how car dealers and overbidden ‘take’ a customer these days

Buying a new car in Russia is becoming increasingly difficult. Stocks of “decent” foreign cars are melting before our eyes, and although demand for Chinese cars is beginning to emerge, their deliveries are much lower than expected. What to do in such conditions for those who still want to switch to more or less worthy “wheels”, the AvtoVzglyad portal found out by talking with market professionals – dealers and outbidders – as part of the Top Gear conference.

So, we repeat, there were no new cars on the Russian market. So, according to Vladislav Ivanov, the head of the group for working with key customers of the Avito Auto resource, the number of advertisements for the sale of new cars on Avito Auto in 2022 will remain “stable compared to last year.” But firstly, the number of offers of imported cars as part of the so-called parallel import is actively growing. At the same time, such machines can be considered new:

– The number of advertisements for the sale of almost new cars from abroad (with a mileage of less than 100 km) reached 16,000. Since June, this segment has been growing steadily at an average of 2,000 advertisements per month, with a particularly notable increase in the number of such advertisements for the Cadillac, Honda, Land Rover, Porsche and Lexus brands,” said Mr. Ivanov.

Another trend noticed by experts: a 25% increase in used car sales. At the same time, there were 3-4% more low-mileage cars (up to 25,000 and 50,000 kilometers). In other words, despite all the difficulties of the moment, today it is possible to find a car worthy in all respects on the market.

In addition, if we talk about used cars, they are now increasingly traded not only by outbids, but also by dealers. At the same time, the latter customers began to give a warranty on such vehicles more often. Which, as Anna Kasyan, marketing director of the RRT autoholding, points out, is very important for buyers today and allows official sellers to compete more successfully with private dealers and with the same overbids. Also interesting here is the fact that, according to a joint survey of Avtoteka source and Rosgosstrakh, more than half of buyers are even ready to buy a warranty if the dealer offers such a service.

Admittedly, outbids have their own trump card in the battle for a customer. Experts from Avito Auto claim that resellers are more open to negotiation and know the nuances of the car’s condition better than car dealers. But which is better – a dealer warranty on a used car or a hefty discount when you close a deal – that’s up to you.
