How and why the Chinese Haval squeezes the last juices out of Russian drivers

It’s strange: the feeling is growing that, instead of furiously chasing the empty Russian market, Chinese automakers are timidly creeping at the doors and gradually showing fearsome price tags from under the floor to buyers. The AvtoVzglyad portal has figured out whether this is a reality or another myth generated by a collective consciousness inflamed by constant crises.

According to the October sales results, it ranked second among all brands in the domestic market. In addition, in an incomprehensible way, this Chinese brand managed to simultaneously enter the list of participants in two Russian state aid programs – preferential lending and preferential leasing.

But that is not everything. Haval is the happy owner of one of the few car factories in Russia, located in the Tula region. Currently, the entire model range presented in our country is produced on it, and a new car rolls off the assembly line every three minutes, as the Ministry of Industry and Trade told the TASS bureau. And in this department, you know, they never lie.

It seems – here it is, the locomotive that will pull our ill-fated market out of the swamp by the hair, like the new Baron Munchausen. But no, assholes. Haval is somehow in no hurry to invest in Russia. According to October results, sales of the brand fell by 8%, and for 10 months of the current year – by 18% compared to the same periods of the previous year.

At the same time, the prices at which the company’s products are offered to domestic buyers are absolutely not Orthodox and not at all Confucian. The price for the Jolion crossover, which reached 3rd place in sales in October 2022, starts at 2,249,000 rubles. If you remember, a year ago it could be bought for 1,189,000 rubles. The updated F7, which takes 9th place in the same rating, has increased in price from 1,899,000 to 2,299,000 rubles in just six months. But this is not the most depressing.

The same Jolion 1.5 7DST in the top configuration costs 974,000 rubles in China, we have 2,519,000. If you have an equally bad experience with the F7, then it is packed, with a two-liter turbo engine, a seven-speed robot and four-wheel drive, a car for a Chinese will cost 1,300,000 rubles, for a Russian – 3,149,000.

Even if we add import duties, excise duties, customs duties, VAT, disposal fee and transport costs, the profit still turns out to be solid – a whopping 30%. And this, if you completely forget that Haval has its own factory within the borders of the Russian Federation, excluding a significant part of the above expenses.

Our relevant ministries and departments cling to all these barrage fees with a dignified better use – the draconian import duties for individuals who decide to engage in parallel imports now fashionable starts at 48%. Nobody knows what the officials are thinking about, because the bossy thoughts flow in ways that mere mortals don’t know. But what the Chinese are thinking about is completely understandable. A land stretched before them, prepared for any experiment through decades of wild prices. It’s stupid not to make money from it.
