Hello, “Oka”: why “Avtotor” begins to release an ugly electric car “Yantar”
Our country is not very good at moving forward. The bright future faded a little, faded a little and changed a little, imperceptibly turning into a beautiful past. The return to the USSR has become universal, but the speed of return is different. Kaliningrad Avtotor, considering itself the personification of the future, innovation and progress, returned the longest, but still mastered the all-Russian trend and embarked on a trusting path to the past. Sergey ASLANYAN, a car expert, reflects on the nuances of a long way back along with the AvtoVzglyad portal.

In the automobile industry of the Soviet Union, there were several mandatory requirements: the car must be massive, affordable and youthful. No one announced a car for the elderly, no general cargo was planned for the people, any price was considered affordable in advance. While none of the requirements were ever met, they were always listed. This was one of the hallmarks of Soviet life – slogans, mottos and sayings. Remaining empty words.

“Avtotor” returns to the USSR and begins development of a youth car under the code name “Yantar”. The USSR did not understand that youth is not a special category of people, but only age. When VAZ and KamAZ, playing perestroika, announced the Oka as a youth car, people were bewildered, because until then it was the Jawa motorcycle if there was anything youthful in the country. And the further fate of the car did not reveal young people behind the wheel of the Oka in quantities that could justify its prescribed status.

“Oka” became the car of the poor regardless of the city or village, although the second status was a spell on the urban habitat. And young people, first of all embarrassed by the size of the Oka, at the very first got money behind the wheel of a Zhiguli, for which it is not so embarrassing to drive girls to a disco. The next step, the youth master foreign cars. Continue to avoid small cars as cabin size is an age priority.

“Avtotor” denotes the status of the car as youth and does not at all mean the age of customers and will not satisfy their interests. The word “youth” predetermines the future modesty, ugliness, irrationality and incompleteness of the car. After all, young people do not know anything and do not understand anything, they are unpretentious and inattentive. Therefore, the car will not be what you need, but what it will be, so that the customer prepares in advance for forgiveness and takes the poor work of designers, technologists and engineers for granted.

The new Avtotor youth car is small, primitive and uncomfortable. It will be very difficult to use it, because it is electric and connected to the city, which will not allow you to escape to a picnic. Like any electric car in Russia, it is unbearable to operate and maintain, promising a prohibitive price in advance.

The Avtotor youth car, in the absence of a target audience, an acceptable infrastructure and a mild climate, is an idea in itself – to do at least something at the factory and present its own innovation to the authorities, which, hopefully, will be supported from the budget.
