– In 2023, the situation in the chip market will not change in any way. Every quarter we increase production capacity to meet demand. All silicon carbide chips, which are mainly used in electric vehicles, are already sold out until at least the end of 2023, says Hassan el-Khoury, CEO of one of the leading suppliers of microelectronic elements, the US company Onsemi.
According to the head of the German company Infineon, Jochen Hanebeck, the shortage of car chips will be felt for some time to come. A similar view, according to the Financial Times, is shared by Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis. He expects the problems with the supply of automotive electronics to continue in 2023.
The publication notes that the shortage is prompting the semiconductor industry to expand production. For example, Infineon will spend 5 billion euros on the construction of its new factory in Dresden, Germany. And Onsemi plans to increase the microchip production scale at its facilities in Rozhnov, Czech Republic, Busan, Korea, and New Hampshire, USA, by a third.
