Why Russia is resuscitating a discontinued low-power V8 engine
In our small and weak country, the V8 engine is always suspicious. He dreams in advance that he can sit under the hood of a car. Like in America, where an engine with excess power is first made, and then a car is added to it. Unfortunately, our entire history of the automotive industry has shown that we are incapable of making large and powerful engines.

The main feature of any car in Russia is insufficient power. What made the USSR auto industry a manufacturer of products, the insufficiency of which was considered the norm, agreed that all cars would be weak and unreliable. It is noteworthy that the main branch of the Soviet Union – defense – also ran out of engines, and when there was a need for heavy equipment, there was nothing to put on it. I had to pile up ridiculous twin engine contraptions to somehow dislodge the equipment (ZiL-135, BTR-60, etc.). It was possible to correct the situation when large-volume cargo diesel engines came to the rescue.

But the Zavolzhsky Motor Plant (Sollers group) made a statement about the production of a V8 engine in early 2023. At the same time, the latest news of this venture is from 12/29/2021. Then production of the archaic V8 ZMZ-523 engine, which was put on the conveyor in 1963 and based on the unsuccessful ZMZ-511 engine of the 1959 model, was discontinued.

During 58 years of production, it has evolved from a primitive truck engine with insufficient power (115 hp) for the GAZ-53 to the legendary bus engine of the PAZ-3205. And it left production with the same 124 horsepower lack of power. with., adding a low ecological class and a small resource.

They tried to modernize the engine, always relying on technological backwardness, low-quality components and the weakness of the technical school. But no one would come up with an excellent engine for a bad country bus. And at the end of 2021 it was announced that the engine was discontinued, since the market does not need it nor the bus.

And in just one year, the most backward engine factory in the country, still burdened by technical weakness, technological backwardness and component quality, an engine that is not made more than once every 30 years, puts on the conveyor a product of an enchanting V8 configuration. The news sparks the imagination and draws a groundbreaking design that could give impetus to the entire automotive industry. After all, there was not a single good V8 in Russia. What kind of engine, what characteristics, what index?

The engine is called ZMZ-523. This is it, old and worthless, that was thrown away last year, with an output of 124 hp. Of. Now there will be a demand for them again, such as the old PAZ buses (designed in 1972), which were impossible to get rid of. The country returns to the Euro-0 standards and GOSTs of the middle of the last century, so the new is not needed, the old is enough.

Saying goodbye to this engine, a press release said: “In recent years, the ZMZ V8 was installed only on PAZ buses and made for the secondary market. In addition, production costs exceeded sales revenues. Every day it became more and more unprofitable to assemble the engine economically.

Finally everything has changed…
