Desire is green: why a true SUV cannot be electric a priori
Now in Russia, both officially and in the context of parallel imports, a stream of high-tech electric cars, including off-road cars, has flowed. At least that’s how car manufacturers describe them. Often they are created by simply transferring the concept of traditional car types to an electric platform. So we have “green villains” with incredible properties. How viable this concept is and what problems the end user may face, the AvtoVzglyad portal investigates.

Electric SUVs often surprise with their excellent performance. True, often everything turns out to be not at all as clear as it is presented to us. For example, car manufacturers in China and Vietnam, for example, simply take platforms designed for internal combustion engines and install electric motors on them to reduce their own costs. It seems that everything is very logical. There is a “cart” with suspension, transmission and interior. Just replaced the motor. But it turns out more complicated.

The peculiarity of the electric power plant is the enormous torque and the instantaneous output of the maximum when you press the accelerator pedal. This creates shock loads on the entire power line of the car. And in the event that the electric motor works in tandem with a transmission designed for traditional internal combustion engines, be prepared to put it on real off-road and drive shafts, and it will tangle with a malicious smile. And then he dies himself. Due to overheating. By the way, it may well turn out that the strength structure of the body will not withstand such loads and will fall apart over time.

And around only the nature and technology of the Stone Age in the form of a digging stick and a potential stone axe. One that has yet to be made in one way or another. By the way, about nature. The concept of a green car means that it does not harm the environment. And not only while charging, but also while driving. On the other hand, an SUV is a car that has to move where there is no asphalt and no roads. He is simply obliged to plow the emerald green grass, destroy millions of ants and frighten the birds. Or stubbornly break new ground in the virgin snow and rob the shelters of hares and partridges.

In its wake, this marvel of engineering leaves an ugly trail, broken trees and deer with a nervous tic, unable to recover from the silent and sudden appearance of a huge mechanical monster. That is, conceptually, the “electric jeep” turns into an evil destroyer of nature. In other words, is the “green” SUV still bad? And the attempt to make it electric is just a tribute to fashion?

A car can be ‘green’ not only because of the energy source it uses to move in space, but also what it spends this energy on. Within the existing road infrastructure, or where the appearance leaves an indelible impression in the form of destroyed animals and landscapes. Incidentally, in most European countries you are not even allowed off-road: a separate permit is required for this. It’s not for nothing that even cans of mud are sold in shops in the Old World! And all so that the owner of the SUV could at least simulate using his four-wheel drive friend somewhere for its intended purpose.

And one more nuance. If the owner of a “rogue” with an internal combustion engine can take jerry cans of fuel with him on an expedition, guaranteeing the possibility of a long autonomous journey, then this does not seem to shine for his colleague in an electric car. So far it has not been possible to carry a supply of “green” electricity. Although the AvtoVzglyad portal cannot fail to note that it is the electric drive that gives the car absolutely incredible off-road potential. That’s just like trying to create an army of killers out of the ideological pacifists.
