As expected, all brands showed negative sales dynamics in Russia in 2022. The only exception may have been China’s Dongfeng, which, against the backdrop of a general, if artificial, shortage, managed to build just over 1,500 cars against the 500 implemented a year earlier.
Many changes took place in the TOP-25 best-selling cars, starting from the colossal fall of the Japanese Toyota RAV4, Nissan Qashqai and X-Trail to the Korean Kia Sportage, ending with the enchanting failure of the French Renault Duster, once our most wanted crossover, as well as the unexpected departure of the German Volkswagen Tiguan.
The Chinese, represented by Haval and Geely, without any hesitation began to break into the top ten, which will squeeze the “foreign” competitors a little more out of the “best” rating. Only the bestsellers remained unshakable last year, and then not all of them. Let’s actually talk about it.
The uncompromising LADA Granta emerged as the absolute leader in the market, which, however, sold half as many units as in 2021. Although, it must be admitted, reaching almost 100,000 units sold in the conditions of the most severe crisis for AVTOVAZ is literally a breakthrough.
The restart of production of Grants of the 2022 model year certainly helped, albeit without ABS, but cheaper, and the state aid program became an additional incentive for the buyer.
The situation is similar to the Niva family, which has undergone an update and at the same time a price reduction – thanks, among other things, to the state program of preferential car loans. As a result, more than 30,000 timeless home SUVs have found new owners. For comparison: at the end of 2021 there were about 50,000.
But the VAZ flagship collapsed significantly and lost customers, of which there were three times more a year earlier. Yes, in 2021 the model received the status of the best-selling passenger car in the country. And if Vesta went over the counter like hot cakes and captivated more than 100,000 people, then by the end of 2022 there will be about 30,000. But here it is important to understand that the cars of the current version are almost over, and due to a shortage of components, the production of the updated one ended, without actually starting.
The bestseller of the Korean brand, proudly boasting the title of the best-selling foreign car in Russia, lost in sales three times. The reason for this is not only the cessation of production, but also the indecently increased prices. However, more than 25,000 cars sold are also a result.
In absolute terms, Solaris lost significantly less than its double barate compared to 2021, but in terms of the number of cars sold this year, it barely reached the 20,000th mark. Again: “thanks” to the production shutdown, the semiconductor crisis and the greed of dealers.
