General Motors clearly does not expect major breakthroughs for itself in its home country – due to fierce competition. In Europe, American cars are also not particularly welcome. In the Chinese market, it is neither shaky nor shaky, but it is necessary to grow and develop somewhere. And it is desirable where the population is affluent enough to afford a “real American car.” GM considers South Korea one of those markets. How does this relate to Russian affairs, you ask? Let’s explain. At the moment, used cars of local brands, mainly Hyundai and Kia, travel in a strong stream from Korea to Russia.
And in terms of the volume of imports into our country through Vladivostok, used “Koreans” are second only to right-hand drive “Japanese”. Moreover, cars from Korea mainly come to us on order: not old, with a low mileage and in good condition. But there are few used cars of American models.
This is due to the fact that until recently the same GM sold here relatively small quantities of its products (last year – about 37,000 units). But the situation will change in the very near future as the Yankees plan to drastically increase their presence in the local market.
Accordingly, the supply of overseas models in the Korean “secondary market”, aimed, among other things, at the Russian Federation, will increase sharply. As part of the announced offensive on the “Korean front”, GM Korea recently announced the launch of six new products in the local market in 2023 simultaneously. Among its three brands – Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC.
The Americans clearly seem to understand that in the mass segment they are unlikely to be able to compete with Korean competitors in their native country. That’s why GM decided to “give customers a truly American experience,” according to The Korea Times. To do this, the Americans came up with the idea of positioning their cars as premium brands in the Korean Peninsula.
Of the models intended for local consumers, the Chevrolet Trax Crossover has already been mentioned, which is assembled there – at the Changwon plant. In addition, customers will be offered an electric car on Ultium’s new proprietary platform: Cadillac Lyriq. As for the GMC brand in Korea, it plans to break in here with a hefty all-American pickup GMC Sierra. GM has not yet circulated about the other “Korean” novelties of the current year. However, you can be sure that most of them will have every chance to come to Russia later.
