Russian roads will be repaired more often with old asphalt

The Russian authorities adopted the technology of cold recycling more than 20 years ago during the reconstruction of roads. But if earlier it was used only in some regions, now they are thinking about scaling up the practice – because it is possible to significantly save budget funds and reduce repair time.

The Rosavtodor company decided to investigate the “practice of application” of cold recycling technology on the roads of the Russian Federation, therefore held a corresponding tender and chose the winner – the Rosasfalt Association. She, who received a contract of 26.4 million rubles, among other things, will have to collect statistics and analyze data – no one has done this since the early 2000s.

If the results of the study confirm the effectiveness of cold recycling, it will be used more often in road construction and reconstruction. What is the essence of technology? The removed asphalt is ground, mixed with sand, gravel, cement or bitumen and then forms one of the layers of a new coating. As a result, there is a reduction in repair costs, a reduction in time limits, savings in logistics and disposal (the material is processed on site).

Experts interviewed by Kommersant generally approve of this technology. While they note that additional research is needed, only highly qualified personnel who are first-hand familiar with the recycling process should be recruited. Road builders, on the other hand, complain about the “variability in the properties of the layer materials” and the great influence of the weather on asphalt processing.

At the same time, it is curious that companies operating toll roads make much less use of cold recycling. “On our road, the coating must be particularly durable and wear-resistant,” for example, in SZKK (the operator of the 15-58 km M11 Neva stretch). That is, it turns out that the concessionaire directly says that you cannot do quality work with “innovative” technology: where money is saved, there is a reduction in service life … However, we are waiting for the results of the Rosavtodor study.
