Spark plugs are extremely simple, so coming up with something radically new is unrealistic. But for the sake of hard money it is necessary. This is where engineers and marketers go out as best they can.
For example, models with two or more electrodes are now on sale. According to the manufacturer, they increase the power of the engine, because they ignite the fuel-air mixture more efficiently. In fact, the spark only hits one electrode. The rest are made for greater durability of the consumable. As a result, the engine power does not increase.
For some products there are special slots on the side or central electrodes. Many “experienced” mates are sure that such a solution increases the number of sparks. In fact, as in the first case, this is done only to increase the resource.
And at car dealers you can find ones with a cone resonator around the main electrode. The sellers claim that this is how the flare effect is created, which reduces fuel consumption. In reality, the ignition process goes like a flash and a candle can’t point it at anything. So this is just an excuse to “powder” the driver’s brain.
Recently, models have appeared that draw conclusions with soldering of expensive metals such as tungsten, iridium or palladium. Many believe that after installation, the car will “fly”. In fact, nothing like that will happen. The spark in such spare parts really has great stability, but this does not affect the torque in any way. The only plus is the longer lifespan.
Finally, there are plasma parts, for which a lot of money will be forgiven. Here we note that every candle is a kind of plasma generator, since a spark discharge is cold plasma in its purest form. Therefore, absolutely any such consumable can be called plasma. And in this case, “plasma” is pure marketing. Empty, but merciless to the driver’s wallet.
So don’t believe the garage stories and advertising. There is no point in overpaying for imaginary new technologies. It is easier and cheaper to supply conventional spare parts and replace them if necessary.
