Motorcyclists taken off wheels: Russian riders hesitant to switch to Asian “holes”
Spring is just around the corner, and when better than now to start thinking about buying a new motorcycle. Admittedly, the two-wheeled transport market has been a rolling ball since last year and this season doesn’t promise to get any better. For example, last year in Russia, total sales of “motik” without circulation were blown off by as much as 16%. And this fall it can be even faster. Why, the portal “AvtoVzglyad” found out.

Almost all Japanese, European and American motorcycle dealerships fled like cockroaches when the lights came on last year. Neither Yamaha, nor Kawasaki, nor Honda, nor BMW even waved goodbye, but they so swore love and eternal friendship … But last motorcycle season was saved by the fact that dealers had at least some stocks of equipment.

True, sellers did not fail to inflate prices for the remnants of former luxury. But even with such jump-off prices, there was no end to those who wanted to acquire a “horse with a good pedigree”. And, most likely, it was thanks to warehouse stocks of motor vehicles from countries that were once friendly to us that the market decline turned out not to be so steep.

But in this season, as experts predict, bikers will get hungry. Warehouses are empty, there are no deliveries (isolated cases of parallel imports are not taken into account), which is why we will see a real vacuum in the new motorcycle market. And unlike the automotive sector, where all free niches were immediately occupied by the Chinese, there is no trend here, nor can it be. Although China is cunningly going on the offensive here.

Simply because powerful and technologically advanced high capacity bikes are not yet produced in the same Celestial Empire. Yes, and it is not certain that domestic riders are morally mature enough to entrust their lives to the “horse” from China. As the motorcyclists themselves say: the old “Jap” is better than the new “Chinese”. Although in this sense the situation is changing.

Yes, the trend towards growth in non-branded motorcycle sales has been clearly outlined. So, according to the data of the agency “AUTOSTAT”, the Indian Bajaj, which sold 2340 units last year, reached the top three best-selling brands in our country; Regulmoto, which made people happy with its products in 1971; and Motoland in China, which sold 1,806 bikes.

But in fourth place, according to last year’s sales results, BMW is modestly huddled. Yes, those same Bavarian bikes, which were absolute bestsellers in 2021 (a whopping 2,831 were sold in the pre-war year), rolled back to a modest 1,050 bikes sold in 2022. By the way, the American Harley-Davidson also lost quite a bit in sales volume – as much as 52% – only 602 motorcycles passed through the Russian retail network, and therefore the overseas brand did not even enter the TOP-5.

Closes the top five most popular motorcycle brands in Russia, the Chinese Avantis, which showed crazy growth last year. For comparison, in 2021, 378 bicycles of the company were sold, and in the 2022 season, 912 people voted for this brand by one ruble.

If we talk about which regions of our vast country made the largest contribution to sales statistics, Moscow, the Moscow region and St. Petersburg excelled here, buying up a third of the total volume of new “two-wheeled horses”. The remaining â…” went to motorcyclists from the regions of Sverdlovsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Chelyabinsk, motorcyclists from the Krasnodar and Krasnoyarsk regions, the Republic of Tatarstan was also pleased with new clothes.

Well, a total of 15,493 new motorcycles were sold last year. Let’s see what sellers will please us with in the coming season, but judging by the fact that none of the manufacturers present in Russia have yet announced any worthy novelties, there is not much reason to be happy.
