Toys for the rich: why China’s auto industry is selling us extremely expensive electric cars
If anyone didn’t know, China is still developing quite well in the Western paradigm. And this means he’s volens-nolens about all the major global trends, including the near-religious worship of electric vehicles. It would seem, what do we care? Let them do whatever their heart desires in their Trans-Amur region. But no, the Chinese also see us as involved in global processes. Portal “AvtoVzglyad” came up with what threatens us with such a delusion.

In the near future, our southeastern neighbors will increase sales of electric vehicles to â…“ of the total volume of new passenger cars. The owner is, as they say, a gentleman. With the number of cars that Chinese automakers bring down on the heads of their fellow citizens, they can be as weird as they like: In March of this year alone, 1.61 million cars were sold in the country, according to the China Passenger Car Association.

Not to black caviar

For comparison, in Russia this number was 69,013. Even taking into account the tenfold demographic superiority of the Celestial Empire, 2.5 times more vehicles were sold there for every thousand inhabitants. This number is more than enough to meet all the needs of the population, despite the fact that a significant portion of them generally prefer to travel on scooters.

Here such Chinese come to us in full confidence that our market is quite saturated with traditional cars and we fully share their desire to conquer the environment by all available and inaccessible means. But in reality, figuratively speaking, it turns out that we don’t have enough bread and we are constantly being sold black caviar. We’re choking on this caviar, but we’re fucking eating it.

In the first quarter of 2023, sales of new electric passenger cars (BEVs) in Russia increased by 95% compared to the same period last year, reaching 1,661 units, according to the Avtostat agency. Also in March – up to 702 electric trains. But by Chinese standards, it still won’t be enough. How can they be?

Price four

Let’s look at the four most popular electric models, only one of which can be called “budget”. This is the Lipetsk Evolute i-Pro, the price of which today starts at a ridiculous amount of 1,990,000 rubles. This is followed by the German Volkswagen ID.4 and the American Tesla Model Y – for more than three and six million rubles respectively. But the real “Chinese” settled in fourth place – the Voyah Free crossover. On the price tag of the basic version – you will not believe it – it is proudly written: 8,890,000 rubles.

Tell me honestly, two years ago you would have believed that in Russia they would buy a “Chinese” (!), electric (!) for nine lyams! Well, this is some kind of nonsense, then for this money you could easily buy a brand new BMW X6 xDrive 30d with an “automatic” in the M Sport Plus version. And it would be nice if this Chinese beauty was somewhere at the very bottom of the popularity rating – no, anyway. At the end of March, Voyah Free controlled 7.3% of the Russian electric car market, amazingly astonishing 51 buyers with its oriental charms. And the company is not at all complex, which means that the prices are clearly out of tune. On the contrary, she begins to sell the Dream minivan for 9,290,000 rubles!

Appetizing comes during the meal

If you look, Voyah is nothing more than an electrical sub-brand of the well-known Donfeng group. Just half a year ago, when the company’s management only planned to make our fellow citizens happy with their electric crossover, the price was called completely different. Liu Zhanshu, deputy general manager of Voyah Sales, assured RIA Novosti that the cost of a car in Russia would be about $ 52.7 thousand. At the current exchange rate that is about 4.3 million, but not nine.

Probably “appetizing comes with food” – as the Decembrist joked in the famous novel by V. Erofeev. They take it, so why be ashamed? The country has a terrible deficit, the anti-monopoly authorities don’t catch mice, the Central Bank drops the national currency rate for nothing. “Since some banknotes are floating around the country, there must be people who have a lot of them.”

The whole task comes down to explaining to these people that an electric car is fashionable and a car for 9 lyams is cool. And at the cost of an unrealistic margin to compensate for meager sales. With these prices, buying an electric car will for a long time remain the fate of a few – either very rich or bitten by Greta Thunberg. There is a third option, but it already concerns difficult combinations that belong to company fleets.

Therefore, all arguments that the main drivers for the development of the segment should be free parking and free travel on toll roads, as well as zero transport tax, are nonsense. Take a look at the price tags. What are your advantages for someone who bought a piece of self-propelled iron for the price of a one-room apartment in Troparevo?
