Sweden is building the world’s first e-Road, capable of recharging any electric vehicle driving on its surface. The intention is to make these types of vehicles even more appealing to the public by making long distance travel easier. It will be added to the European section of the E20 and will cover 13 kilometers between the cities of Halsberg and Örebro.

This choice is due to the fact that the route is extremely popular and passes through three main cities: Stockholm, Ghotenburg and Malmö. These are the three most populous municipalities in the country and the construction will help with mobility between locations without having to stop and look for electric car chargers along the way. The forecast for its completion is 2025, still in the first semester.
Trafikverket is still studying what type of charging it will use on its road: conductive or inductive. While the conductive will work through wireless plates to charge vehicles, which is similar to what we see in mobile devices (approximately), the inductive will need to run electrical cables all over the ground and supply electricity to cars through coils. It is worth noting that none of them will negatively affect conventional cars using fuels such as gasoline and alcohol.
Trafikverket’s strategic development director Jan Pettersson said converting 25% of the region’s roads to e-roads could help make electric vehicles cheaper and more attractive to the public. Dynamic charging will explore the possibility of reducing the size of batteries – which will no longer need to be made for long trips or carry a large charge with you. With cheaper production, less costs will be involved and therefore the price can also be lowered.
However, it should be noted that this is still a long way off. The e-road will only be ready in 2025, and there is no indication that other countries will support this idea to make the project viable in the long term. According to the institute, the initial plan is to build it and then expand the route to 3,000 kilometers by 2045.
