An unusual discovery
The location of this monumental find is no less interesting. The Byzantine St. John’s Wort, built between 524-527 by Anicia Juliana, the daughter of the Roman emperor Anicius Oliberius. They came across the statue of Pan near the ruins of the Polyeuctus Church.
This church was once the largest church in Constantinople and served as a spiritual center until the construction of the magnificent Hagia Sophia Cathedral in 532-537. Abandoned nearly 800 years ago, the Temple of Saint Polyeuctus was rediscovered in the second half of the 20th century during excavations for an underground passage. Since then, many important finds have been made in this region that show the rich historical past of the region.
This latest discovery adds to the growing collection of remarkable artifacts from the site. Just a few months ago, archaeologists reported the discovery of a headless statue believed to date back to the 2nd century AD.
