As oceanographer Drew Lucas told CBS News, the algae bloom period is called a “red tide” because the water turns a rust color throughout the day. But at night the beauty of the tides amazes the imagination with blue, bright waves.

How waves glow at night thanks to bioluminescence

Bioluminescence, a chemical reaction frequently seen in marine organisms, causes light to be emitted from living things. When these organisms move in waves, light becomes visible. The bioluminescence of most marine and land organisms appears blue-green, but some land species, such as fireflies, insect larvae, and even fungi, also glow yellow.

Earlier passersby in Ireland discovered a large hole on the coast of Portmarnock. They immediately announced that it could be a trace of a “space meteorite”. But it turned out to be just a hole dug by a small group of people during a sunny weekend.
