Solar roof and water reuse system: Google opens a new campus

A new office has already opened for employees in San Francisco. The company built for five years.

All for the sake of ecology

The company reportedly for the first time fully developed the project, designing the space and constructing a building from scratch.

  • Before planning, employees were asked about the most comfortable working place, and according to their wishes, the architects combined team and individual workspaces on a single level. According to the blog, the experience of the people in the building was preferred over looks.
  • The campus uses the principles of “biophilic design”. Each workplace has a street view, many green plants inside, and the windows have automatic curtains that open and close according to the weather and time of day.
  • There are two kitchens and seven cafes inside the building. It does not use gas, only electricity.

  • Solar panels and wind farms on the building’s roof will provide the building’s electricity 90 percent of the time.
  • All non-drinking water needs are met by the liquid produced on or near the campus. The ponds collect rainwater all year, the wastewater passes through a treatment system to flush toilets and irrigation facilities.
  • The ventilation system uses 100 percent of the outside air (conventional systems – about 20-30 percent, according to the company).
  • Non-toxic materials were used for construction and finishing. They checked everything from carpet, tile, paint, pipes, plywood and furniture.
  • The campus is heated and cooled by geothermal stacks. The company states that its geothermal facilities are the largest in North America. A large geo-exchange system is integrated into the structure, reducing the amount of water commonly used for cooling by 90 percent, equivalent to five million gallons of water per year.

As part of the Google Artist In Residence program, works by local artists have been placed in the courtyards of Bay View. The drawing relates to the ecology of the bay area and helps to navigate the building. And next to it are willow groves.

The company is now completing the construction of another campus called Charleston East.
