A study in the Carbon Majors Database found that only 57 companies responsible for 80 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions between 2016 and 2022. Of the total emissions during this period, 38 percent came from nation states, 37 percent from state-owned enterprises, and 25 percent from investor-owned companies.
Nearly 200 parties committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by adopting the Paris Agreement in 2015. However, 58 state-owned and investor-owned companies in the Carbon Majors database have increased their production in recent years. This number represents manufacturers worldwide. Most of the companies evaluated are from Asia, with some coming from Europe and North America.
It cannot be said that the situation is changing for the better, at least not slowly. The International Energy Agency found that coal consumption increased by eight percent in seven years to a record 8.3 billion tonnes.
These companies have made billions in profits by denying the problem, delaying and obstructing climate policy. They spend millions advertising themselves as part of the sustainable solution, while continuing to invest in increasing fossil fuel production.
– Tsepora Berman, director of international programs at Stand.earth and head of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Fossil Fuels, said in a statement.
He says the findings highlight that we need governments to stand up to these companies more than ever before, and that we need new international cooperation under the Fossil Fuel Treaty to end the proliferation of fossil fuels and deliver a real transition to a greener future.
