Professionals working at sea are, of course, constantly at risk. And it’s not just surfers who face danger. Photographers and videographers who work in this field, too, as they monitor strong waves around the world every day. Last week, for example, accident featuring a boat full of professional surf photographers passing through the waves teahupoin Tahiti.
The accident occurred at an event on the west coast of France
In a video taken last Saturday, May 28, the boat can be seen calmly passing the first wave, and the second hits it, forcing it to be almost vertical. So you can see some pros fall off the boat. Watch the full video below.
Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt and only some of the camera equipment was damaged in any way.
Many people criticized the location of the boat at the time of the crash, emphasizing that the boat should not be too close to the surfers among other issues. This is a professional surf photographer Tim McKennawho was on the boat at the time of the accident, explained the situation.
“We were on the orange fishing boat Poti Marara, driven by Eric Labaste. This is the current situation in Teahupoo. A growing number of taxi boats, jet skis, tourists and locals wanting to get close to the scene for selfies or stories.”— said in a message on the social network.
McKenna goes on to explain: “In addition, at high tide, some sets break closer to the channel, further compressing the area. The clip shows how our boat was caught too close to the first wave with Joao Vitor “Chumbinho” Chianca.. Nothing dramatic that Eric, I and many other professionals have experienced hundreds of times over the past 25 years. We are aware of the risks of shooting around the waves and are fully prepared.”
In the publication, the photographer also said that one of his colleagues fell into the sea with a camera in his hand and that the boat driver could have accelerated at full speed on the wave to get around the situation, however, he knew that this would only aggravate the situation, as water skis blocked way ahead.
The professional also reported that when the vessel was upright, his crewmates Chris Bryan, Ted Grambo, Mendo De Dornellas, Natho Gonzalez, Aritz Aranburu and John Aspuru were thrown into the water. McKenna, Olivier Ravel, Eric Bernate and Andrew Fierro managed to stay on board.
Tikhupoo’s waves of varying size, power and speed are known to be some of the most dangerous waves in the world and the place is part of an international chain of professional surf competitions and major sporting championships.
There are several photos of the Brazilian Joao Cumbinho, who was riding the waves at the time of the accident.

Drones at concerts are already commonplace, but care must be taken to avoid accidents
