SEMP is a Brazilian electronics company founded in 1942 by Commander Affonso Brandão Hennel. Of course, those who are older and watch this video know that the company had a massive presence in Brazil during the golden decade of radio and television. SEMP (abbreviation for Sociedade Eletro Mercantil Paulista) was the avant-garde of electronic devices here, becoming the first company in the country to manufacture radios on national territory.

The company also produced the first radio player in 1949 and the first television set in 1951, both of which were made nationally. It was during this time that one of the SEMP radios became known as the “chapelinha” due to its nostalgic church-like design. In 1953, the company changed its name to SEMP Rádio e Televisão SA and produced the first units in a decade with built-in radio, television and turntable.

In 1977, the company entered into a share agreement with Toshiba, which directly transferred Japanese television technology technology. In 2016, following Toshiba’s exit from business, SEMP announced its new partnership with TCL Corporation, becoming *SEMP TCL*. Today, SEMP is one of the largest electronics manufacturers in Brazil.
