Scientists have figured out how to build a black hole model on Earth.

Such experiments are a new level of study of these objects inaccessible to us in nature. Thanks to such research, humanity can discover many new fundamental facts in physics that cannot be obtained with mathematics alone.

How is this possible?

Physical modeling of black hole behavior is possible thanks to the quantum properties of these phenomena. More precisely, the simulation of quantum phenomena makes it possible to describe them by the behavior of black holes. Beyond the event horizon of black holes, light and other electromagnetic radiation cannot leave this object. But at the level of quantum phenomena, particles can even penetrate beyond the event horizon, called Hawking radiation.

In nature, Hawking radiation cannot be detected by any device – it is like thermal radiation and is millions of times weaker than residual radiation. The value of the physical model of a black hole proposed by Dutch scientists is that it makes it possible to record the imitation of Hawking radiation with an accuracy that mathematically corresponds to the natural behavior of black holes.

An important model for science

One black hole model proposed by physicists is a linear chain of atoms in which electrons can move. The system is configured to have its own event horizon – a barrier that electrons cannot cross. At the same time, experiments have shown that the tunneling effect of electrons, which is well known in the quantum world, manifests itself in full, allowing them to go beyond the “event horizon” of the black hole model.

Exceeding the artificial event horizon with electrons was accompanied by a noticeable increase in temperature, which corresponds to theoretical calculations for an equivalent black hole system. This phenomenon was largely similar to Hawking radiation. We can’t record such events in nature, but in the lab it seems like all these can be modeled and studied.
