New space race? Russia wants to resume the program of flights to the moon

Even amid ongoing conflicts between Russia and Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that he will resume the space exploration program. The goal is to get back at the forefront of space and send missions to the moon.

The announcement comes at a very challenging time for Europe and refers to historical events such as the Cold War, when the United States and the Soviet Union fought a silent war and entered the space race.

Russia is back in space

Currently, Russia is suspended from the lunar programs that it had in connection with European Space Agency (ESA), the announcement took place this Wednesday (13). Another revenge for the country’s war against Ukraine.

The confirmation of the resumption of the Russian space program was made in Cosmodrome Vostochny, dedicated to the 61st anniversary of the day when Yuri Gagarin, Russian cosmonaut, became the first person to travel into space. In addition to confirming this initiative, Putin also announced that he intends to launch new probes into space.

And these projects already have a start date: August 22, 2022. According to the Russian website RT, Putin plans to launch the Luna-25 probe that day.

The President said that the draconian sanctions imposed on Russia by the United States, the European Union and several other countries in connection with its military attack on Ukraine will not force Moscow to abandon space exploration.

Despite the difficulties and attempts to intervene from outside, we will implement everything we have planned with consistency and perseverance.“, Putin said.

And to help him, he will count on one of his biggest allies at the moment, Belarus. That together with Russia the entire infrastructure for future space flights will be built.

Away from space exploration for more than five decades, lunar exploration was initiated by Russia and the first successful mission was with the Luna 2 probe in 1959.
