The study shows that the core of the Earth has slowed down; see how it affects the weather

Researchers at Peking University were surprised by the results obtained after analyzing the Earth’s core. According to seismologists Yi Yang and Xiaodong Song, in a study published in Nature GeoScience, the Earth’s core has slowed down, and this could have affected the climate.

Researchers have been studying the motions of the earth’s core since 1995. The data is collected from studying earthquakes, and the results indicate that the Earth’s core is “getting slower.” This could have important implications for the climate, from change in the length of the 24-hour day, such as changes in sea level and temperature. If, on the one hand, scientists believe that it is possible to “darken the sun” to combat global warming, then the deceleration of the Earth’s Core (if it really occurs) may pose new challenges for scientists of the future.

The publication claims that the core has slowed down

Evidence since 1995 has indicated that the Earth’s core typically rotates faster than the Earth itself, and that over the past decade, the core must have slowed down and started to follow the Earth’s rotation rate, the researchers say. If this does happen, the discovery could have numerous climate implications.

What are the consequences of the discovery:

  • The discovery would imply changes in the Earth’s gravitational and magnetic fields.
  • The length of a full day can be changed in a few fractions of a second. Since the length of the day is related to the rotation of the Earth, a slowdown in the Core could also slow the rotation of the Earth, which would change the length of the day.
  • A change in the gravitational field can lead to deformation of the earth’s surface, a change in sea level and global temperature of the planet.

According to the authors themselves, new scientific discoveries take longer to be properly assessed. In an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais, Song, one of the authors of the study, explains: “The days have been getting shorter in recent years, and there may be a link to this change. [na forma como o núcleo gira]”.

Despite the complex and perhaps disturbing content of the data presented, the researchers argue that the results could help in understanding the Earth’s inner core and how it works to maintain our magnetic field.
