Withings, a smart watch company, announced the U-Scan device at CES 2023, gadget capable of analyzing the user’s urine. That’s right, U-Scan is a device that can be installed in the toilet to monitor various health data analyzed using urine.
U-Scan is a small device that consists of two parts: a reader and a replaceable cartridge. The reader is at the bottom. The cartridges are available in two versions: reproductive health and nutrition; each analyzes different aspects of the urine. According to the company, for the reader to work, it is enough just to urinate directly on the device, there is no need to touch the object. After the urine passes through the reader, U-Scan sends the data analysis directly to the app, which is accessed via a smartphone.
Interestingly, U-Scan can only be used by one person. OUR the device has a temperature sensor capable of distinguishing urine from wastewater, avoiding confusion in the readings. In addition, the device has a low-energy radar that can determine the distance and movement of those using the toilet. this is U-Scan knows exactly who is urinating on it.
It may seem strange, but it is necessary for the device to be able to perform daily and accurate analysis of the user’s urine data. Withings CEO Mathieu Lethombe says that to use the U-Scan, you just need to urinate on the device normally and let the scanner do its job.
U-Scan cartridges are capable of performing completely different analyzes. The Cycle Sync cartridge measures luteinizing hormone (LH), pH and hydration levels. Tracking LH levels helps determine what phase of a woman’s menstrual cycle she’s in, making it easier to estimate the time of ovulation.
The Nutri Balance cartridge, in addition to monitoring pH and hydration, is able to analyze the level of vitamin C and the presence of ketones. After the tests are completed, U-Scan sends the results to the Withings app. Each cartridge is capable of performing about 100 tests. and lasts about 3 months. Remember, if you don’t want to test, just don’t urinate on the device.
According to the company, U-Scan able to analyze other meters such as creatine and albumin, but for now it will only put the two cartridges mentioned above on the market. “We have a dream vision where you can have a lab at home that doesn’t require effort or the need to send something to someone,” commented Letomb.
Withings hopes to capture the attention of the medical community and use the device in research and patient follow-up. The U-Scan will also be commercially available and is expected to go on sale in mid-2023 for $530 in the European market. After each cartridge, they will need to be purchased separately.
