French archaeologists have unearthed a rare statue of nude Venus at a Gallo-Roman landfill.

Researchers have found a Gallo-Roman quarry that was turned into a landfill in ancient times. Among the debris, they found sherds, coins, fibulas and several terracotta figurines. The most striking find, however, was a ten-centimeter figurine depicting the nude goddess Venus Anadimene.

What did scientists learn about the figurine?

The find is significant, as the figurine is believed to be from the 1st or 2nd century AD and finding a nude Venus figurine is a rare occurrence. The excavation covered an area of 3,250 square meters and was located on the outskirts of the ancient city of Condate, founded by the Celts in the 2nd century BC, according to the website of the French National Institute of Archaeological Research (Inrap). Researchers believe that the stepped pit, more than two meters deep, was first excavated in the 1st century BC. It was used to excavate the foundations of the city’s houses and streets until the 2nd century AD. After this period the site was covered with garbage and was not used until the 14th or 15th century, when craft or residential buildings were built on it.

The importance of finding

The discovery sheds light on the history of Rennes and the importance of the quarry in the Gallo-Roman period. The discovery of the nude Venus statue is of particular interest to researchers as it provides a rare glimpse into the artistic expression and cultural beliefs of the period. The statue will be carefully studied and preserved by INRAP experts, which will allow future generations to appreciate this unique historical monument.
